Along the Marmion Corridor, in the Highland Park area of Los Angeles, the traffic signal controllers also provide train control for the train operators via train signal heads mounted on the traffic signal arms. Intersections are interconnected with vehicle and train detection to provide clear movement for the train, coordinated with stop indications for cross traffic.
In Pasadena, interconnected traffic signals pick up advance notification of approaching trains adjusting traffic signal timing to allow trains clear movement. While motorists are held at intersections approaching the grade crossings, thus avoiding queuing across streets parallel to the rail line.
